Overhaul on Handicaps under way
Half a million golfers will be given a revised handicap under a new system being rolled out by Golf Australia from Friday.
The United States Golf Association's version will be introduced.
The new system hopes to better reflect a player's recent form in their handicap as opposed to the current set-up where a couple of good rounds can lower it dramatically but then take a lot longer to go back up.
Under the changes, a player will take the best 10 scores from his last 20 rounds, calculate the average score, and then divide the average by 0.96 to find out their handicap.
"It's a very rigorous system used around the world," said Golf Australia's rules and handicap manager Simon Magdulski.
Golf Australia is also set to re-rate each golf course in Australia and when travelling to play, golfer's handicaps will be adjusted according to the difficulty of the course.
